Ayr High School ball team was there playing the Lamoni High School team and the game was about half through when Carroll Spurrier, of the Mr. Ayr team, tried to make second base and accidentally ran into Leonard DeLong, who was playing at that point. It is reported that DeLong was in the act of catching the ball when the collision occurred. It is thought Spurrier's knee or shoulder struck him over the region of the kidneys, causing internal hemorrhage and the young man bled to death that night. Dr. Goff gave the young man immediate attention and, while he feared internal injuries, did not think from the condition of the young man that the accident would prove fatal, but it did and after five or six hours of more or less suffering, the hemorrhage completed its undiscovered work and death resulted. No one could feel the shock of such an experience more keenly than Mr. Spurrier, who with his father came down from Mr. Ayr on the first train to be with and console those who were so abruptly deprived of their loved one. The funeral was from the Saints Church, Monday afternoon and the schoolmates of the deceased turned out in a body to pay their last espects to one they had learned to love and respect because of his ability and lovable disposition. Mr DeLong was only about sixteen years of age and had recently won second place in the county oratorical contest held in Leon. Many of our citizens will recall the ability and many appearance(s) of the young student who showed great promise of future success as a speaker. The body was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Lamoni.
