Read More	Leonard Fredrick Kohlmeyer July 17, 1929 - December 7, 2014 Leonard Fredrick Kohlmeyer, the son of Carl and Elsie (Whitthoeft) Kohlmeyer, was born on July 17, 1929 on the family farm near Wolsey, SD. He entered this world in such a hurry he didn’t even wait for the doctor. His father gave him the German name Lenhart which was changed to Leonard when he started school. Leonard attended the Week Country School and like many children in those days he had to walk the mile to school with his siblings. Leonard’s dad was a farmer and life was hard for Leonard’s family having to grow up during the Depression. Leonard started working for other farmers when he was 15 years old until 1949, when he began to work for Armour and Company in Huron. Leonard worked for Armour for 34 years and then for Swift and Dakota Pork until his retirement in 1991. Leonard was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952. After basic training, he was assigned to the base in Okinawa, Japan until he was honorably discharged in 1954. Leonard met the love of his life, Beverly Schmaal one Sunday after church at her parent’s gas station. Beverly later moved to Salem, OR. The couple was married on September 1, 1957 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Salem. Beverly joined her new husband, as they started their life together in Huron, SD. The couple has lived in Huron ever since that time. To their happy home, they added five children: Leonard Jr., Douglas, Cheryl, Marcel, and Karla. They were saddened by the death of their daughter, Karla on February, 22, 1993. Leonard loved music. He played the mouth organ and every time he played, he would play “You Are My Sunshine” for Bev. Leonard loved to dance and attended many dances. He also enjoyed the CB Radio and along with Beverly helped start the “Huron CB Radio Club”. Many old CB handlers remember the “S.D. Viking”. Leonard loved to tinker on almost anything and repaired televisions and radios for people for many years. Leonard and Beverly enjoyed camping and later joined the Huron Rover’s Camping Club. Leonard especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Leonard was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wolsey. He was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron all his married life. He was also a member of the American Legion. Leonard Fredrick Kohlmeyer, age 85, of Huron, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron. Most blessed and grateful for sharing Leonard’s life are his wife, Beverly of Huron; son, Leonard Jr. (Kesakulnee) Kohlmeyer step-grandchildren: Joe Ngaocokengan, Andy Batelle of Tuscon, AZ and Jennifer (Steve) Lujan their children, Julio, Athena, and Stasia of LA. Son, Douglas (Jean) Kohlmeyer of Green Bay, WI, their children: Kelsie, Kaleb, and Rylie and step-grandchildren Summer (RJ) Tilleman, and step-great-grandchildren: Aryan, Peyton, and Toby, step-grandchild Samara (Andy) Frelich and step-great-grandchildren: Harley, Lily and Charlotte all of Green Bay, WI. His daughter Cheryl (Rich) Schriever of Dell Rapids, SD and grandchildren: Cody Breck and Karla Breck of Sioux Falls, SD, and Emily Breck of Dell Rapids, SD. His son, the Rev. Marcel (Deborah) Kohlmeyer of Orchard, NE, and grandchildren: Gabrielle, Madalyn, and Andrew. Leonard’s brothers: Nathaniel (Corinne) Kohlmeyer of Huron, SD, and Max (Phyllis) Kohlmeyer of Wolsey, SD; sister, Amanda Noack of Huron; brother-in-law, Donald Schmaal of LaPine, OR; 2 sisters-in-law: Phyllis Kohlmeyer of Huron, SD and Marlys McPherson of Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Karla; infant brother, Marcel; brother Marcus; sister, Doris; daughter-in-law, Monrudee Kohlmeyer; mother- and father-in-law, Art and Elda Schmaal; brothers-in-law: Arnold Noack and Larry Schmaal; and sister-in-law, Susan Schmaal. His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron, with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron, and Military Honors by the Huron Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. with the family present from 5-7 p.m. Friday, December 12, at Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service to begin at 6:30 p.m.; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
