Read More	Leonard Bubach, 93, Towner, ND, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018, at the Heart of America Medical Center of Rugby surrounded by his loved ones. Leonard Henry Bubach was born July 6, 1924, the son of Herbert and Clara (Lebahn) Bubach, on the family farm in Litchville, ND. He attended a rural school through the eighth grade before attending and graduating from Litchville Public School in 1942. He remained home and helped his father on the farm while his brother, Selmer, was in the Army during WWII. He enrolled at Valley City State College in the winter of 1946, but was called home from school in 1948 due to the death of his father. He then farmed until the fall of 1952, when he returned to school. He graduated from Valley City State College in August of 1954, and began his teaching career and coaching in Bergen, ND, in September of 1954, where he would meet Darlene Olson. Leonard and Darlene met under rather unusual circumstances. Leonard was coaching the 7th and 8th grade basketball team and her brother, Everett, was a star player on the team. In those days, the players and fans all rode in cars to games after meeting at the town’s only grocery store. Darlene needed a ride and there was room in Mr. Bubach’s car, so she rode along with some of the players in his car to Sawyer. Now, it appears that Everett had gotten into trouble while misbehaving in school, so Mr. Bubach decided that Everett and his friend would not play basketball that night. Imagine Darlene and her Aunt Leona’s disgust and anger at this upstart coach who had benched these two boys! Leonard recalled it was a long ride home after the game, as he went home alone. This incident occurred in December of 1954, but Darlene and Leonard eventually resolved their differences and they were married on June 3, 1956 at Oak Valley Lutheran Church of Velva. Leonard received his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of North Dakota in 1961 and over the next 25 years the family was fortunate to live in wonderful communities and make many friends. He served as Superintendent of Schools for Bergen (1954 – 1961), Butte (1961 – 1966), Sheyenne (1966-1975) and Maddock (1975 – 1986) where the couple, along with their six children, were happy to move into a spacious house next to the school. The family was very much a part of the community until Leonard retired from school administration on June 1st, 1986. The couple moved to Towner in July of 1986, moving into a large, beautiful, older home on two and a half acres of land just east of the school. The yardwork, gardening and maintenance of the house kept Leonard plenty busy. He also enjoyed working at the Towner State Tree Nursery for the next 18 years. Within a couple years of retirement Leonard found that a man with 30 years of experience can’t always remain in retirement when he is needed. He returned as the Interim Superintendent for the public schools of Velva from 1988-1989, Maddock in the fall of 1990 and Butte from 1993-1994. Leonard and Darlene were once members of the Bergen Lutheran Church, Grace Lutheran Church of Sheyenne, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Butte, North Viking Lutheran Church of Maddock and presently members of Zion Lutheran Church of Towner. They were also on the church council in Butte, Maddock and Towner. Leonard was a member of the Butte Men’s Chorus and sang at various functions within the Butte community. He was also a member of the Square Dance Club of Butte and Maddock, the Sons of Norway of Maddock, Lodge 68 of Maddock, the ND Association of School Administrators and an Honorary Chapter Farmer in Vocational FFA Agriculture. He received membership to the Quarter Century Club in recognition of 25 years of Administrative Service to education and the children of North Dakota as well as acknowledgement of 20 years of service to high school activities from District 13 Basketball. Leonard enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports. He was an avid fan of the Twins and Vikings and especially enjoyed watching the games with his family. He was a master Pinnacle and Whist player and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Surviving family includes: Wife of 62 years, Darlene Bubach, Towner; sons, Russell (Debra) Bubach, West Fargo, Robert (Chris) Bubach, Leeds and Richard (Marj) Bubach, Minot; daughters, Renel (Gordon) Anderson, Erie, CO, Renee (Steve) Crosby, Denver, CO and Rachelle (Mark) Beluscak, Aurora, CO; grandchildren, Kellen (Alexandra), Brendan (Alexandria), Kirsten (Cory), Morgan (Anthony), Courtney, Jonas, Hayley, Bryce (Genesis) and Keisan; great-grandchildren, Masen and Lydia; brother, Selmer Bubach, Litchville, sister, Bernice Botner, Valley City; sister-in-law, Bonnie (Richard) Bubach, West Fargo; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; infant grandson, Jordan Lee Bubach; brother, Richard Bubach; brothers-in-law, Byron Botner and Norman Olson; and his sister-in-law, Delores Bubach.
