Description	:	LATIMER — Leonard Meyer, 94, of Latimer, died Tuesday (Feb. 24, 2009) at the Sheffield Care Center where he had lived for the past 6½ years. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Friday at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Latimer, with the Rev. Thomas Cofer presiding. Interment will be at Marion Township Cemetery, Latimer. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield, and one hour before services at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield, and one hour before services at the church. Leonard Meyer was born April 20, 1914, at Latimer, the son of Henry and Dora (Freie) Meyer. He attended school in the Latimer area through the eighth grade, then at the age of 60 he earned his high school GED of which he was very proud. Leonard married Martha Olk on Sept. 6, 1935, at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in rural Latimer. They farmed in rural Latimer and to the couple two sons, Daryl and Gordon, were born. In 1976 they moved into Latimer and retired. Leonard was very active in church; he was a Sunday school teacher, served on the Church Board and was on the building committee when the church moved from rural Latimer into town. Leonard was active in his community; he served as 4H leader, was a Community Club member and served on the Latimer City Council. He also served on the Franklin General Hospital Board at the time when the new hospital was built. Living family members are his son, Gordon (Mavis) Meyer, Latimer; four grandsons, Danny Meyer, Mason City, David (Peggy) Meyer, Latimer, Chad (Maricia) Meyer, San Antonio, Texas, and Kevin (Janet) Meyer, Clear Lake; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Leonard was preceded in death by his wife Martha; son, Daryl, and his wife, Janice; sister, Evelyn Sprau; and his parents, Henry and Dora Meyer. Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 641-892-4241.
