Family and casket bearers are asked to meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Leonard died Saturday, December 16, 1995 at St. Luke's Midland Regional Medical Center. Leonard J. Schaefer was born March 11, 1923, to Peter and Mary (Simon) Schaefer in Hoven. He attended school in Hoven. He worked on the family farm for a number of years. He married Marcella Veronica Ronan on Nov. 14, 1940 in Gettysburg. They lived and farmed in the Lebanon area until 1946, when they moved to Ashton. He worked in the Ashton area for a number of years and then moved to Huron, where he operated L & L Repair. He retired and moved to Aberdeen in 1975, where he had lived ever since. Marcella died May 22, 1989. Leonard enjoyed his grandchildren, yard work, wood carving and animals. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include two daughters, Pat Humphrey of Aberdeen and Sharon Schaefer of St. Paul, MN; one sister, Evelyn Schneider of Lebanon, SD; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother and one sister. Honorary casket bearers will be Stan Clausen of Ashton, Ole Olson of Highmore and Don Schneider of Lebanon. Casket bearers will be Jeff Miller of Pierre, Dave Senger of Sioux Falls, Don Siebrecht of Northville, Wayne Dvorak of Ashton, and Mark Gustafson and Ross Wharton, both of Mitchell. Organist will be Mary Beth Berreth and soloist will be Sabrina Siebrecht. Usher will be Frank Hilt.
