Leonard was born December 9, 1927 in Elba, NE. to Louis and Stacia A. (Matousek) Spilinek. Leonard attended Elba (NE.) Schools where he graduated in 1946. He lived at home with his parents until they passed away. Although he was somewhat handicapped, he worked hard and never complained. Spilinek, 84, of Greeley, NE. formerly of Elba, NE. died Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the Greeley Care Home, Greeley, NE. Leonard was born December 9, 1927 in Elba, NE. to Louis and Stacia A. (Matousek) Spilinek. Leonard attended Elba (NE.) Schools where he graduated in 1946. He lived at home with his parents until they passed away. Although he was somewhat handicapped, he worked hard and never complained. He worked on a farm east of Elba, NE. and other farm jobs and then was employed at the Farmers Elevator in Elba, NE. for many years. He hauled rafters for mobile homes from Aurora to Kansas. Leonard once went with a harvesting crew south into Texas and Oklahoma. His last employment was for the village of Elba, NE. where he helped take care of the streets and water. Leonard moved to Heritage Living Center in St. Paul, NE. then to the Golden Living Center in Grand Island, NE. and then to his current home in the Greeley Care Center, Greeley, NE. Leonard was a long time member of the Elba (NE.) Fire Department. Leonard loved to play cards and was very serious about it and he also worked crossword puzzles in the Omaha World Herald and numerous books that he would buy. His friendship was recognized by many. Survivors are: brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Teddy Spilinek of St. Paul, NE. Leonard preceded in death by: parents; infant sister, Marcella Spilinek; and nephew, Craig Spilinek. Inurnment was in the Elba Cemetery, Elba, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on September 9, 2012
