Liggett earned his wings on May 23, 2011 in Portland, Ore., where he spent the last few months of his life surrounded by family and friends. On July 4, 1929 in Whitman, Neb., Leonard was born to Lula Lee Mooney and Olen F. Liggett. Leonard and his sister Catherine were raised by their grandmother, as their mother passed away shortly after Leonard was born. Leonard established himself as a hard worker at a young age, working on local ranches to help make money for his family. In his teens, he quit high school to help care for his ailing grandmother and consequently went from being a student at the high school to being the custodian at the high school so he could help the family financially. At the age of 18, he moved to Gordon, Neb., where he worked on local ranches. In the summer of 1948, he met Grace Junge, and they were married on Oct. 5, 1948. The couple stayed in Gordon, where their first son Danny was born. They then moved on to Igloo, S.D., where Leonard worked at a munitions depot. Shortly after they relocated to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he worked in a gypsum plant and his second son Jerry was born. Moving on to Martin, S.D., their daughter Judy was born. About a year later Leonard moved his family back to Fort Dodge, where their son David was born, after which they moved on to Rapid City, S.D. In late 1955, their journey to California began with a short stay in Los Angeles, continuing on to Scott Valley, where Leonard settled with his family in March of 1956. In Scott Valley, Leonard and Grace settled down and raised their four kids, where he was heavily involved in his children’s lives as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader. In addition, Leonard served as president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles for one year. A hardworking example to those who knew him, Leonard held many jobs, including working at Hjertagers Mill, being a cat skinner and heavy equipment mechanic for Carl Johnson, building roads for Rice Bros. Construction and driving a logging truck for Trygvy Onarheim. Leonard was also a lifetime member of the NRA. In 1975, Leonard took the opportunity to work for a year on the Alaska Pipeline in Fairbanks, Alaska. When Leonard came back from Alaska in 1976 he became a partner in TBL Construction, a company that was in business for over two years. After TBL Construction ended, Leonard went back to work for Rice Construction, from which he retired in 1995. Leonard spent his retirement serving his community through the Valley Oaks Seniors and reaching out a hand to anyone who needed it. Leonard never met a man he couldn’t call a friend and was respected by many. Leonard is survived by his wife Grace; son Danny Liggett of Portland, Ore.; son Jerry Liggett and his wife Vilma of Aloha, Ore.; daughter Judy Crook of Etna; and son David Liggett and his wife ZoeAnn of Gresham, Ore. He is also survived by his sister Catherine Glasgow of Etna. Leonard is survived by six grandchildren and their respective spouses, along with seven great-grandchildren and many surviving nieces and nephews scattered around the globe, as well. Leonard was predeceased by his parents and his son-in-law Harvey Crook. Graveside Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 27, 2011 at the Etna Cemetery in Etna.
