January 2, 1903 Doe Hill News: Mr. Ed Taylor, who has been here for several months, working on Mr. L. M. Pope's house, returned yesterday to his home, at Ottobine, Va. Mr. Pope's family are now cozily quartered in their new house. July 3, 1903 Doe Hill News: The Hahn Bros. came yesterday to finish painting Mr. L. M. Pope's house. Highland Recorder May 8, 1908 Doe Hill News Lester M Pope had the misfortune to fall in attempting to go down the steps from the store, and sprained his ankle. It is hoped that it will not prove serious, as he has just recently been able to walk about on crutches. Highland Recorder October 27, 1939 DOE HILL On October 18 at 6:40 in the evening Leonard Miles Pope entered into rest. He was born at Fort Seybert, W.Va., March 18, 1853, was 86 years and 7 months old. He was the son of Peter Pope and Margaret Brake Pope. He taught school in early manhood in his native state. He and his family moved to Doe Hill April 3, 1884 and opened a general merchandise store retiring from active business in 1911, and giving his attention to the farm the rest of his life. He had been justice of the peace for a number of years. He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church South sixty-five years ago, and was Steward in the church for sixty-three years, Trustee fifty five years and taught in the Sunday School for forty years. Mr. Pope lived an outstanding Christian life, and was devoted to his Savior. He was devoted to his family in a very remarkable way. His soul took delight in doing the will of the Lord, while here among men, until it "winged its way back to the God who pave it. One of his last statements was, “The Lord has been my Shepherd for a great many years” He gave each member of his family good bye and asked them to meet him in Heaven. He is survived by one son, Lester T. Pope, of Staunton, four daughters, Miss Lora and Mrs. Henry Roberts of Radford. Va., Mrs. L.H. Shumate of McDowell, and Miss Minnie at home, six grand children and two great grand children, one brother, Jackson Pope, of Ft. Seybert, W. Va. Funeral services were held from the Doe Hill Methodist Church, Friday at 2 o’clock, by Rev. C. W. Paskel, assisted by Rev. George Pope and Rev. L.M. Moffett, a great many people attended the funeral. The floral offering was very numerous and of rare beauty.
