Read More	PRECIOUS LITTLE LIFE SUDDENLY DRAWN to a CLOSE Little Son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mattern Fatally Injured Saturday Morning and Passes Away Early Sunday Morning. Leonard Stephen Mattern, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mattern, was born on the Mattern farm north of Winnetoon, February 23, 1914 and passed away Sunday morning, October 8, 1916 at the age of 2 years, 7 months and 15 days. The little fellow was playing around the farm yard Saturday morning, while his mama was engaged in doing up the usual house work and his papa went over to his brother-in-law's, B.N. Clough's to assist with some work. He had been in the house and was gone but a few minutes, when his mother went out into the yard to call and see where her little boy was, in her usual way. Calling and not receiving any reply, she went out into the barnyard to see if he was there and when nearly to the yard, she saw his precious little form lying on the ground in an unconscious condition. It seems he took his little wagon and went out into the yard where the cattle, horses and mule were turned loose and in some manner, the mule kicked the little fellow on the head, causing a very severe and fatal fracture of the skull. Mrs. Mattern's screams called the attention of her nearest neighbor, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schellen Jr., who were soon to her assistance. Calls were hurried to the little fellow's papa, Joe Mattern and Dr. Crook, who were soon on the scene of the fatal accident. Upon the arrival of the doctor and after an examination of the injury, it was thought best to remove the little patient to the Creighton Hospital, where an operation was performed and everything that medical skill and human power could do was done, but to no avail and the little life, which had only that morning been so full of life and happiness with mama and papa, passed away. Little Leonard was an exceptionally bright and happy little lad and was full of life from the time he awoke in the early morning until his little eyes closed in sleep, tired out from his day of play and happiness. Many friends expressed their love and sympathy with flowers, the bouquet of rose buds being appropriate tribute to a young life that was budding forth under the tender care of those, who dearly loved him. Immediately after death the remains were removed from the hospital to the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Matter. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church at Creighton, Monday afternoon at 3:30, conducted by Rev. Father Windolph and interment made in the Catholic cemetery. The pallbearers were four little boys, Willis Sandoz, Robert Dorsey, Vincent Zimmerman and Elmer Mecke and four little boys acted as flower boys, Stephen and Hubert Schwartz, George Mattern and Arley Clough. The young parents and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Mattern and Grandma Clough and other relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of a host of sympathizing friends in the loss of this precious little sunbeam, whose ray of sunshine will always remain in the memory of those who loved him so dearly.
