Leonard was born on Dec. 24, 1909, in Central City to Benjamin J. and Lucy G. (Jerome) Beetem. Read More	Centurion, Leonard William Beetem, 101, lifelong resident of Central City died Thursday, July 28, 2011, at Long Term Care in Central City. Leonard was born on Dec. 24, 1909, in Central City to Benjamin J. and Lucy G. (Jerome) Beetem. Leonard received his education in Central City and received his high school diploma from Central City High School. After completing his schooling, Leonard worked in Central City and Grand Island and on Nov. 11, 1942, he entered the United States Army. Leonard served in the Asiatic Pacific and was honorably discharged on Oct. 21, 1945. He returned to Central City and worked for Kansas-Nebraska Gas Company until 1950 when he began working for the City of Central City Gas Department. Leonard was united in marriage to Lola Ford Roark on Sept. 22, 1956. Lola died in 1970 and on Oct. 15, 1971, he and Edna Morris were married. Leonard worked for the City of Central City until his retirement in 1975. Leonard was the custodian for the Central City Library in 1975 and 1976. From 1977 until 1986, Leonard worked for Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Leonard moved to Long Term Care in 2004. Edna died in 2007. Leonard was a devoted member of the Heartland Evangelical Free Church in Central City. He was a member of the American Legion Post Six and served on the honor guard for military services for over 50 years. Leonard and Edna worked together to expand the Litzenberg Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop in Central City. Throughout their years managing the Thrift Shop, the hospital was able to purchase many types of equipment from the proceeds. For their dedication and hard work at the Thrift Shop, Leonard and Edna were awarded the Service to Mankind Award. Those left to cherish his memory are his stepson, Jerry and Karen Morris of Omaha; his stepdaughter, Virginia "Jenny" and Charles Snyder of Costa Mesa, Calif.,; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Leonard was preceded in death by his wives, Lola and Edna; sisters, Edna Jones and Marjorie Sober; brother, James; and an infant sister. Interment was in in the Central City Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post Six in Central City, Central City, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on July 30, 2011
