Leonard Zavodny, 69, died at his David City home Monday. Zavodny served as an officer and later as chief in the city's police department from April 1963 to May 1970. I wasn't here at the time and so I never worked for him, but I knew Leonard and he ws a decent fellow," said current Police Chief Steve Sunday. Zavodny later managed a restaurant in the former Perkins Hotel in downtown David City. "The Hotel where the restaurant was located was across the street from what is now the new library. I remember the restaurant was a popular place with good meals," said City Clerk Joan Kovar. Knott Funeral Home in David City is in charge of arrangements. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of David City with Monsignor Adrian Herbek officiating. Burial is at the parish cemetery. Visitation is until 8 p.m. today with a r:30 p.m. rosary and 8-9 a.m. Thursday, all at Knott Funeral Home of David City. Mr. Zavodny was born January 30, 1928, at Brainard to Paul and Bessie (Cernohlavek) Zavodny. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II from September 20, 1946- February 28, 1948. He married Helen Dehmer January 27, 1953, in Brainard. They lived in Brainard for then years and moved to David City. He retired from Excel Corp. in Schuyler. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the church. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Don (Jan) of Missouri, and Mike (Anne) of Nebraska; on daughter, Anita (John) Klement ; one sister, Martha (Don) Behner; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Amelia Dvorak, Evelyn Kliment, Gladys Prochaska and Ludmilla Topil; five brothers, Rudy, Jim, Emil, Ray and Joe; and his parents.
