HELMS One of Union County's Foremost Citizens Passed Away Thursday. Mr. L. R. Helms, for many years connected with the educational and political life of Monroe and Union county died at his home on Lancaster avenue yesterday morning. Mr. Helms had been in failing health for a number of weeks and seriously ill for about a week. Rev. J. E. Abernethy, conducted the funeral services at the home this morning at 11 o'clock. A large number of friends, business associates and former students of the deceased showed the respect they held for him by attending the funeral. Interment was in the Monroe cemetery the pall bearers were R. A. Morrow, C. C. Sikes, J. W. Richardson, J. H. Lee, B. C. Ashcraft and T. J. Gordon. The deceased was born on October 26, 1858, at the old Helms homestead near Mount Carmel church in South Monroe township. He was almost 60 years old at the time of his death. He was a son of the late Joseph C. Helms who died at Greensboro in 1865 while serving in the confederate army. His mother was Miss Frances McLarty, who died a few years ago. When the War Between the States closed Mr. Helms was a boy about six years old. He applied himself diligently to the task of gaining an education. He was a good student and at an early age became a teacher in the public school of the county. He was one of the best teachers that taught in the schools of the county. He won the admiration and respect of all his pupils. During the illness prior to his death many of the old pupils learning of his illness journeyed from all parts of the county to see him. In 1889 Mr. Helms married Miss Rachel Russell, of Cabarrus county. She died in 1910. To this union five children survive: Messrs. Stamey R. Helms and Earl A. Helms, Master Russel Helms and Misses Mabel and Lucy Helms. Two brothers, Messrs. T. L. A. Helms of Unionville and R. L. Helms of south Monroe township, and two sisters Mr. R. L. Bordon and Mrs. T. J. W. Broom both of Monroe township survive him. The deceased moved to Monroe 30 odd years ago and engaged in the drug business for some time. Later he engaged in the mercantile business. He also had considerable farming interests. Failing health forced him to dispose of his mercantile business several years ago and since then he had devoted his time to his farm. The citizens of Monroe recognizing the honest and integrity of Mr. L. R. Helms elected him a city alderman which place he filled with honor and distinction for a number of years. Several years ago the legislature appointed him a member of the county board of education. He held this place until he resigned to assume the duties of a county commissioner. He was chairman of the board of county commissioners during the time he served and no doubt the people would have continue to elect him a member of this board had not failing health forced him to resign about a year ago. He was an honest man, upright an true in all his dealings. He was a consistent Christian and had been a member of the Methodist church since boyhood. All men who knew him knew him as a man in whom they could place their trust. He has departed; but the good he has accomplished in this world did not go with him.
