Married to Anna M. Brosmer. After his father died in 1899, Leo was raised by his uncle Lewis Schlachter and aunt Francis, in Perry County Indiana. He has been incorrectly added to some family trees as Leroy and adopted by the Wassing family. This is not true. ------------- OBITUARY THE JASPER HERALD OCTOBER 11, 1974 PAGES 1, 24 LEO SCHLACHTER, WWI VETERAN TAKEN BY DEATH Leo J. Schlachter, 82, a veteran of World War i and a retired sawmill worker, died at 12:50 p.m. Thursday at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Jasper where he has resided since June of 1969. Mr Schlachter was born April 20, 1892, the son of Phillip and Josephine (Eschcraft) Sclachter. The former Anna Brosmer, to whom he was married in 1910, preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 1946. He was employed by the Eckstein Lumber Company. Surviving are five sons, Jerome of Celestine, Raymond of Victorville, Calif., Leroy of Evansville, Sylvester of English and Arthur of Scottsdale, Ariz.; four daughters, Mrs. Henry Raufeisen of Birdseye, Mrs. Sally Nordhoff of Indianapolis, Mrs. William Kluesner of Haysville and Mrs. Robert Knies of Celestine; one brother, Vince Schlachter of Cedar Lake, Ind., and one sister, Mrs. Ida Suthheimer of Evansville; 34 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Friends may call at the Becher and Kluesner Downtown Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Schnellville, followed by burial in the church cemetery. American Legion Post 147 of Jasper, of which he was a member, will conduct military graveside rites.
