Description	:	David Riley Parks and Sarah Lozetta (Parkhurst) had first homesteaded in Lind County, Iowa where their first three children, Dave, Lily and Joseph, were born. They left Iowa driving a covered wagon with a team, taking two pigs, a cow and calf and headed for Kansas. They nearly starved that winter as times were very hard and David could find no work. One of the horses died so they were forced to harness the cow until they reached a town. The town was Leotis and in January of 1880 their forth child, a son, was born.... Read More	David Riley Parks and Sarah Lozetta (Parkhurst) had first homesteaded in Lind County, Iowa where their first three children, Dave, Lily and Joseph, were born. They left Iowa driving a covered wagon with a team, taking two pigs, a cow and calf and headed for Kansas. They nearly starved that winter as times were very hard and David could find no work. One of the horses died so they were forced to harness the cow until they reached a town. The town was Leotis and in January of 1880 their forth child, a son, was born. They name him Leotus. That spring they traded the cow for another horse and went on to Nebraska where David's sister Lovira (Vi) and her husband Richard Allen had opened a store on the South Loop River. David Parks father, Morgan Parks, a veteran of the Civil War was also residing there, working in the store. Dave raised race horses and sold ice. They lived in a house that was part dug-out, part sod. Lydia, Cora who died at 8 months, John and Myrtle were born there. Some years later after Lydia was married, Dave left his family behind and went to Montana. The next year he came back for a brief time and then, accompanied by Lydia's husband Charles Hansberry, went back to Montana. The next year, in 1903, he sent for his family. Sarah, Lydia together with her four month old son, Earl, Myrtle and John all traveled by train to Billings, Montana. There they were met by David and Charles. They then traveled North and West to the Larb Hills by wagon where David continued his work of raising horses. Their home was more than sixty miles from town with no other white settlers as neighbors. Myrtle met George when she and her mother were cooking for the Baeth brothers during shearing season.
