Description	:	LeRoy C. Bender served four years in the U.S. Air Force and then returned to Java to farm and to work for Java and its school. He was a local history buff and loved genealogy. He was often called upon as an authority of area history, and he enjoyed playing cards. In failing health, LeRoy became a resident of the Golden LivingCenter in Mobridge on April 23, 2008. He died at the center on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at the age of 78. He was born July 13, 1929, in Eureka to Henry and Alvina (Schlaht) Bender. He grew up on his parents' farm in Campbell County and attended the rural Bender School in the Thompson District. He graduated from Java High School in 1947. On Nov. 29, 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Wash., where he was an airplane mechanic. On July 21, 1951, while home on leave, he married Hilda Kurle at St. Paul's Lutheran parsonage in Java. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force on Sept. 2, 1954. Following his discharge he returned to Java where he farmed, was the Java City finance officer, clerk of the Java School, and bus driver. He retired as a business manager of the Java School. LeRoy was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, was sexton of the church for many years, and was a past member of the American Legion. Surviving are his wife, Hilda Bender of Java; one son, Jon Bradley (Patsy) Bender of Mobridge; two grandchildren, Mellissa Minnig of Pocatello, Idaho, and Lisa Bender of Sturgis; and two great grandchildren, Rebecca and Teagan. His parents and stepmother preceded him in death. Funeral services for LeRoy were Saturday, May 24, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Java with the Rev. Jeffrey Wallace officiating. Casketbearers were Roger Kapfenstein, Steve Biel, Adam Lutz, Lavern Wolf, Rueben Wolf and Craig Rau. Burial was at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Mobridge Tribune May 28, 2008
