Description	:	Leroy was a ship captain who sailed from Searsport (Waldo County) Maine according to the book Searsport Sea Captains by Colonel Frederick Frasier Black (1960) p. 83. According to that source, he sailed on the following vessels: the brig Clytie (1870-1879), the ship Clarissa B. Carver, was sunk in the harbor of Kobe or Hiogo, Japan following a collision with the British steamer Glen Morganshire. After two years' trial in Japan, the case was carried to the courts of Shanghai where they upheld Captain Dow and a verdict was finally rendered by the Admiralty Court of London for his cargo. Nothing but the pertinacity of the captain saved the verdict for the owners. The case was settled on April 12, 1888. Captain Dow retired from the sea in 1890."
