LeRoy died Friday, March 6, 2015, at Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek, Nebraska. LeRoy Frank Novotny, son of John and Rose (Nemec) Novotny was born on Dec. 4, 1920, in Meadow Grove, Nebraska. LeRoy attended public schools at Rural District #52 and the Madison Public Schools. After the death of his mother when he was a child, LeRoy lived with his grandparents. Early in his youth, he began working for Ern and Maude McIntosh. He later made his home with the McIntosh family. LeRoy married Kathryn Pittack on August 25, 1942, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church on Buffalo Creek. They were married for 72 years, living most of this time in the rural Meadow Grove community. LeRoy began service to his country in 1942, when he joined the United States Army. His tour of duty included theaters in Africa, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria. LeRoy was awarded the Purple Heart, five Battle Stars, and the Bronze Service Arrowhead. He was honorably discharged from the Army in October of 1945, with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon his return from World War II, LeRoy resumed his life-long career of farming. He farmed south of Tilden for several years and then operated a farm south of Meadow Grove for 53 years. Leroy was very involved in the community. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served many years as a trustee. LeRoy was also an elder in the church and served as an officer of the Lutheran Laymans League. He also served on the School Board of District #61 and the Elkhorn Valley Public Schools. Leroy was a member of the Tilden Community Hospital Board, the Madison County Feeders Association, the Farmers Union Co-op Board, the Meadow Grove Rural Fire Board, the Meadow Grove Credit Union, Farm Bureau of Madison County, and was a committeeman for the Madison County A.S.C.S. LeRoy also helped organize the Madison County Agricultural Society and was a member of the Tilden-Meadow Grove Lions Club. LeRoy is survived by his wife Kathryn; three daughters and their spouses, Pat (Richard) Seelmeyer of Battle Creek, Nebraska, Rosemary (Rodney) Goetsch of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Cyndee (Kent) Mann of Grand Island, Nebraska; ten grandchildren, Kim Seelmeyer, Scott Seelmeyer, Michael Seelmeyer, Ramsey (Kerri) Pratt, Ryan Goetsch, Shane (Amie) Goetsch, Sherri (Peter) Fontane, Kate (Cory) Bohling, Kenzie (Jay) Mollring, and Kurt (Lindsey) Mann; fourteen great-grandchildren; and one brother, Arlie Novotny of Lincoln, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy; and a sister, LaVerne.
