He was then the platform manager for Chautauqua Group, bringing prominent speakers and entertainers to rural communities. 1928: graduated from Carthage College with a B.A. 1931: graduated from Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity. From 1966 to 1969 he directed the school of the North Central Illinois Association for the Aid of Retarded Children. After 1969 he was a visiting pastor in homes and hospitals in the Dixon, Illinois area. From 1943-47 he was secretary of the Lutheran Welfare Conference of America. He was a member of the American Association for Mental Deficiency, Council for Exceptional Children. In Lee County, Illinois, he was chairman for March of Dimes; chairman of the Council for the Aging; and chaplain for Parents Without Partners. He married Lois Matthys Bareis on 11 June 1939. They were the parents of Lois Ann and Cheryl Lee. He was the step-father of Charles J. Bareis and Janet Bareis.
