Description	:	LeRoy Graber, 94, of Freeman, S.D., passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at Oakview Terrace Nursing Home. He was born March 8, 1920, the youngest of six children born to Ben C. and Lena Graber. LeRoy attended Freeman Academy and Freeman Junior College and taught in country schools for two years while farming with his parents. He married Virginia Kleinsasser in 1949, and together they farmed Royvin Registered Holstein Farm. Read More	LeRoy Graber, 94, of Freeman, S.D., passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at Oakview Terrace Nursing Home. He was born March 8, 1920, the youngest of six children born to Ben C. and Lena Graber. LeRoy attended Freeman Academy and Freeman Junior College and taught in country schools for two years while farming with his parents. He married Virginia Kleinsasser in 1949, and together they farmed Royvin Registered Holstein Farm. They received many awards for their outstanding registered Holstein herd and for milk production records. LeRoy and Virginia had six children: Jan Johnson (Steve), Randy Graber, Kim Graber, Nancy Ratzlaff (Mark), and Viki Graber (Judy). Their son, Donald, died in infancy. Outside of family and farming, LeRoy was involved in a variety of organizations. He was the chairman of the building committee of the present Salem-Zion Mennonite Church. He served on the boards of the Freeman hospital for 23 years, the Mennonite Economic Development Association (MEDA), and various dairy boards. He especially enjoyed doing volunteer work, fishing, hunting, gardening and travelling all over the world. When LeRoy was 10 years old his grandfather, Jacob Graber Post, taught him to weave willow baskets. After retiring from farming, weaving baskets became a cherished hobby, one which allowed him to travel and develop many new friendships. Because of his willow basket weaving craft, LeRoy was honored as a National Heritage Fellow in 2009 by the National Endowment for the Arts. He felt privileged to be able to go to Washington, D.C., to receive this award. LeRoy was a wonderful role model for his family and for his eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Amanda Sensenig (Jesse), Emily Skeeters (Bryce), Erica Rupp, Chelsea Fortney (Luke), Whitney Waltner (Derek), Brady Graber, Ryan Ratzlaff and Evan Ratzlaff. Great-grandchildren are Carly Sensenig, Macy and Clara Skeeters, and Ben and Violet Fortney. Preceding LeRoy in death were his parents, Ben C. and Lena Graber; sisters: Olivia Deckert (Herbert), Viola Friesen (Art), Albe Deckert (Clarence); brother Ellis Graber (Delpha); infant brother; brother-in-law Clarence Kleinsasser; and infant son Donald. Left to mourn his death are his wife, Virginia; his children; brother-in-law Jerry Kleinsasser (Harriet); and many relatives and friends. LeRoy had a special appreciation for God's beautiful and wondrous creation, and he will be remembered for his delightful sense of humor and positive outlook on life. His funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, rural Freeman, with Pastors Eric Deckert and Robert Engbrecht officiating. Organist was Ruby Waltner with special music by the Salem-Zion Men's Choir, directed by Sherilyn Ortman and accompanied by Deb Schmeichel, and Steve Johnson.
