He was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Knight of Columbus, American Legion Kent Kailey Post No. 45 all of Lawrence and VFW Post No. 10043 of Deweese. Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Tami Winkel of Glen Elder, Ks., Rita VanAckeren of Norfolk and Carrie Menke of Lawrence; one son, Michael of Lawrence; three sisters, Patricia Hubl and Donnaleen Himmelberg, both of Lawrence and Maureen Faimon of Blue Hill; one brother, Everett, and three grandchildren. ======================================================= The Lawrence Locomotive (Lawrence, NE), Thursday, April 28, 1994; pg. 1 Funeral services were held for LeRoy "Sonny" Menke on Monday, April 18, 1994 at St. Stephens Catholic Church at 2:00 p.m. Rosary was held Sunday evening at St. Stephens. The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated by Rev. Thomas Au with Rev. David Bourek present in the sanctuary. Pallbearers were Tim Himmelberg, Kurt Himmelberg, Randy Himmelberg, Don Hubl, ___ Hubl, Russ Faimon, Brad Menke and James Theer. Ray Menke was lector at the services, Marilyn Svoboda led the congregational singing accompanied by Linda Ostdiek. Mass servers were Troy Himmelberg and Kevin Ostdiek. Acolytes were Walter Kohmetscher and Rich Menke. LeRoy was the son of George and Alvira (Buescher) Menke. He was born on a farm south of St. Stephens December 11, 1934. He attended St. Stephens grade school and was a farmer and veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Germany and later being called back to service for the Berlin Crisis. On September 1, 1964 he was united in marriage to Dottie Knepp at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Alma Ne. To this union five children were born: Tami, Rita, Michael, Mitchel and Carrie. Sonny was a true friend to all who knew him and was always willing to help others. His children were proud to call him "Dad" He was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Kent Kailey Post No. 45, all of Lawrence and VFW Post No. 10043 of Deweese. He is survived by his wife Dottie, one son Michael of Lawrence; three daughters, Mrs. Steve (Tami) Winkel of Glen Elder, KS,, Mrs. Jason (Rita) VanAckeren of Norfolk, NE. and Carrie Menke of Lawrence. Four grandchildren: Luke and Zach Winkel, Kiley _agels and Cayd VanAckeren; three sisters, Mrs. Bill (Patricia) Hubl and Mrs. John (Donnaleen) Himmelberg of Lawrence and Mrs. Bob (Maureen) Faimon of Blue Hill and one brother, Everett. Sonny died on April 14, 1994 at the age of 59 years, 4 months and 3 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Mitchel and one brother LaVern Menke. Graveside services were at St. Stephens cemetery (sic). Many friends and relatives attended the funeral.
