A survivor of the Bataan Death March, he settled in Des Moines after World War II, where he worked as a master locksmith at the Strauss Lock Co., eventually assuming ownership of the company, which he built into the largest of its kind between Chicago and the West Coast.

He was the soul of kindness: a devoted husband, brother, uncle and son-in-law, beloved by all who knew him.
