Death followed a long illness. He had reached the age of 74 years, 11 months and 12 days. He was born at Mondamin, Iowa on May 5, 1897, the son of Edward and Sena (Jacobson) McElwain. Read More	Onawa Sentinel - Onawa, Iowa - April 1972 Leslie E. McElwain, a longtime resident of Blencoe, Iowa, passed away at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa on April 17, 1972. Death followed a long illness. He had reached the age of 74 years, 11 months and 12 days. He was born at Mondamin, Iowa on May 5, 1897, the son of Edward and Sena (Jacobson) McElwain. At the age of two, he came to Blencoe with his family and had lived in that community since that time. On May 30, 1920 he was united in marriage with Jennie Burger at Onawa, Iowa and the couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary two years ago. He served as a substitute mail carrier for a time, ands as county assessor. For some 30 years he operated a store at Blencoe retiring several years ago. A member of the United Congregational Church, he was much interested in the affairs of his community and assisted as best he should. He served in the Army during World War I and was a member of the Stevens-Kelley Post No 665, American Legion and Frontier Lodge No 382, A.F.& A.M. of Little Sioux. He is survived by his wife, Jennie, of Blencoe. Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 1972 at the United Congregational Church at Blencoe with the Rev William Bessmer officiating. Mrs. Magnus Jepson was the organist. Bearers were Stanley Jirovsky, Robert Comfort, William Chapman, Dick Cartmell, Ford Bigelow and Leo Marley. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery at Blencoe with military rites by Stevens-Kelly Post No 665, American Legion, Blencoe, Merritt Surber, Commander. Arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa.
