Alexander, son of James S. and Rosabelle (McAlpin) Alexander, was born in Taylor County, Ia, Sept 21, 1889, and passed away following a long illness at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, July 26, 1957. In 1909 Mr Alexander was married to Rosa Bullock. To this union was born one daughter, Ruth Good of Painesville, Ohio, who survives her father. Alexander, son of James S. and Rosabelle (McAlpin) Alexander, was born in Taylor County, Ia, Sept 21, 1889, and passed away following a long illness at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, July 26, 1957. In 1909 Mr Alexander was married to Rosa Bullock. To this union was born one daughter, Ruth Good of Painesville, Ohio, who survives her father. On Nov 1, 1945, he was united in marriage with Hazel Weaver of Coin, Ia, who also survives him. Mr Alexander was the youngest of a family of three children, all of whom, together with the parents, preceded him in death. He received his education in the Bedford schools and was a resident of Taylor and Page Counties the greater part of his life. At an early age Mr Alexander found it necessary to earn his own livelihood. It was natural that his interest should turn to lumber and woodworking as his father was a skilled cabinet maker. Although he was engaged in other work during his youth, it was in the lumber business that he spent the fruitful years of his life. For many years he was connected with this business in New Market, Ia, coming to Coin in February, 1932, where he continued with the Coin Lumber and Grain Company until his death. Mr Alexander was interested in conservation and held membership in the Izaak Walton League. He took a very active interest in the affairs of the New Market Public Schools, where his daughter was a pupil, and served on the Board of Education for several years. Through the years Mr Alexander developed his natural gift for woodworking into a hobby. He fitted up a workshop in his home where, as long as his health permitted, he and his wife spent many satisfying hours making handsome pieces of furniture for their home and for friends. A product of this workshop which brought much pleasure through many holiday seasons, not only to the people of Coin but to the entire county, was a beautifully fashioned Christmas scene mounted on the roof of the lumber building. The illuminated, life-size figure of St Nicholas in his sled, drawn by animated reindeer, delighted both children and adults. Mr Alexander had been in failing health for some time and confined to his home for more than a year.
