Description	:	Leslie, 87, of Athens died February 18, 2013 at home. He was the third of 10 children of Forrest and Ruth Snyder. Les graduated from Athens Agricultural School in 1943. Drafted into the U. S. Army at age 18, Les was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, the Bronze Star for meritorious service, and the Purple Heart for being wounded in action. He then became owner/operator of a Wood Mizer sawmill and... Read More	Leslie, 87, of Athens died February 18, 2013 at home. He was the third of 10 children of Forrest and Ruth Snyder. Les graduated from Athens Agricultural School in 1943. Drafted into the U. S. Army at age 18, Les was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, the Bronze Star for meritorious service, and the Purple Heart for being wounded in action. After serving in the European Theater in WWII, he worked for Clark Equipment Company in Battle Creek for 31 years. After retiring, he consulted with Rockwell International. He then became owner/operator of a Wood Mizer sawmill and began logging and milling lumber for many area farmers and himself. He was a member of the Athens Congregational Church where he sang in the men's choir. He was a member of the Athens Youth Council and was active in their maple syrup project for 60 years. Les served on the Athens Village Council for 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, Mecwarf Post #5319 and the Masonic Lodge, both of Athens and a longtime member of the Athens Rotary Club. Les enjoyed working with wood in his shop, creating heirloom furniture for his family. Just before entering the service, Les married Rowene Converse on April 16, 1944, she survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Ellen (Michael) Pugh from West Branch, MI, Janet (Norman) Masten from Kalispell, MT, Sarah (Daniel) McClure, and Anita (Robin) Shoup, both of whom reside in Athens. In addition he is survived by 10 grandchildren, Gina (Parks) Berry, Jacqueline (Pugh) Ratliff, Christopher Masten, Kelly (McClure) Dunmire, Brent McClure, Joanna (Pugh) Kartes, Julia (Pugh) Wilcox, Katie (McClure) Newburn, Erin (Shoup) Thompson, and Curtis Shoup; 27 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Francisco of Naples, Florida; and Peggy Hollenbeck (Dick) Portinga, Diane Reese, and Vera (Charles) Walker, all of Portage, brother-in-law Gordon Mitchell, and sisters-in-law Iva Snyder of Fulton and Maxine Snyder of Vicksburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Richard, Stewart, and Lee Snyder; sisters Mildred Mitchell and Alice Fry; and brothers-in-law Samuel Francisco, Dana Fry, Gary Hollenbeck and Ronald Reese. Funeral services were Thursday, February 21, 2013, at Fulton Christian Church, Pastors Lynne Meintz and Noah Miller, officiating. Interment was with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Athens Youth Council, Athens, MI, Athens Congregational Church, Athens, MI, or Reverence Home Health & Hospice, Kalamazoo, MI. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home.
