Description	:	Lancaster native, of Roar Gap, NC, retired president and chairman of the board of the F.W. Woolworth Co., died in Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC. He is survived by his father, Arthur, Lancaster; his wife, Zora; son, James, Ashville, NC. And a sister, Mrs. Ray (Ruth) Creaglow, Lancaster. Burcham spent 46 years with Woolworth, beginning as a trainee in the Lancaster store during the early days of the great depression. His first boss or store manager was the late E. Burcham spent 46 years with Woolworth, beginning as a trainee in the Lancaster store during the early days of the great depression. His first boss or store manager was the late E. Ray Jewell of Lancaster. In 1931 he was a management trainee at the Cleveland-based regional office. In 1936 he was named manager of his first store in Bellefontaine. After managing 3 other stores in Cleveland he became a district manager in 1945, a merchandise manager in 1948, merch. Supervisor in 1952 and assisted the regional vice president at the Cleveland office in 1954. He was transferred to Woolworth's New York headquarters in 1955 as an executive office representative. At a retirement banquet in 1977, Burcham noted his father had urged him not to abandon his career with Woolworth to pursue one in the glass industry. He didn't and 34 years later, in 1965, was named Woolworth president. He took on the added role of chairman of the board in 1970. After retirement, he remained a member of the board of directors until 1985.
