Highland Recorder December 6, 1940 LARGE SHE-BEAR AND CUB KILLED ON MIDDLE MOUNTAIN Mr. A. C. Mullenax and son Lester of the western part of the county were in Monterey Monday. They reported that recently a bear hase been killing sheep on Middle Mountain for some of the farmers. On last Friday a party of huntsmen composed of Kennie Waybright, Audrey Weese, Paul and Edwin Wimer, Lester Mullenax and A. C. Mullenax, started out after the sheep killers. In a very short time the men and dogs routed a big bear, which appeared very suddenly through the timber, giving them no time to develop “bear-fever” or “bear fright”. The marauder was brought to the ground-by the quick and accurate lone shot of Lester Mullenax’s gun. Following this kill, a cub was chased for a short distance by Paul Wimer, who soon dispatched the young bear. The large she-bear killed by Mullenax weighed over three hundred pounds. The Recorder October 5, 1989 Lester Calhoun Mullenax, 79, of Bartow, died Sunday night, Oct. 1, 1989 in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins, W.Va. He was born April 15,1910 at Blue Grass, a son of Aaron & Bella Wimer Mullenax. In September 1934, be married Hazel Mullenax of Bartow, who survives. He was a member of The Church of God, and was a retired farmer and logger. In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Helen Cook of Hagerstown, Md., Charlene Gossard of Willamsport, Md., Arlene Hause of Hagerstown, Md. and Linda Mallow of Job, W.Va.; four sons, Murrell of Arbovale, W.Va., Dale of Hagerstown, Md., Arthur and Wallace Mullenax, both of Bartow, W.Va.; two sisters, Nellie Waybright of Monterey and Olie Waybright of Churchville; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday (today) in the Church of God at Durbin, W.Va., by Pastor Craig. Burial will be in the Mullenax Family Cemetery on Allegheny Mountain in Highland County.
