Description	:	Lester E. Sparks a New Castle resident since 1907 and one time mayor, died at 4 PM Thursday, May 4, at the Clagett Memorial Hospital, following a long illness. Sparks was a farmer for several years and worked for 35 years with the fruit and vegetable products inspection service, retiring in 1958. After his retirement, he worked as deputy county assessor and county pest inspector. Read More	Lester E. Sparks a New Castle resident since 1907 and one time mayor, died at 4 PM Thursday, May 4, at the Clagett Memorial Hospital, following a long illness. Sparks was a farmer for several years and worked for 35 years with the fruit and vegetable products inspection service, retiring in 1958. After his retirement, he worked as deputy county assessor and county pest inspector. For the past several years he has been a rock hound and has had a rock collection gathered from all over the world. A member of St. John's Episcopal Church, he served as Justice of the Peace in New Castle; as well as, being mayor. He was also a member of Neighbors of Woodcraft for 40 years. Born in Longmont, Dec. 19, 1889, he moved with his family to Glenwood Springs in 1900, attending Glenwood Schools and graduating from there. He has lived in New Castle since 1907. He married Jean I. Murray, June 19, 1912 at New Castle. His wife and three sons, Murray of Birmingham, Alabama, Jack of Rogers, Arkansas and Walter of Aberdeen, Idaho, all survive him. Other survivors include one brother, Nathan, of Woodsboro, Texas, two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Nichols of Rifle, and Mrs Mary Nelson, of Lon Beach, Calif., six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral services were held today (Monday), at 2 PM, in St. John's Episcopal Church in New Castle. Burial followed in the Highland Cemetery. Sowder Funeral Home, in Rifle was in charge of arrangements.
