He was born December 21, 1952 in Wilkes County to Lester Guy and Ola Mae Handy Shumate. Mr. Shumate attended Dehart Baptist Church. He was a truck driver with forty years of experience and a contractor for many years. He was also owner and operator of Shumate’s Mobile Home Moving Service for 21 years. Surviving are his wife, Janie Ruth Lyle Shumate of the home; three sons, Gary Rex Shumate and wife April, Davis Eric Baker and wife Karen all of Hays, David Ryan Baker and wife Rebecca of Milton, Florida; ten grandchildren, Hunter and Cole Shumate, Ian, Lexie, Robbie and Allie Baker, Hailey, Savannha, Rylan, Kyler Baker; one great granddaughter, Issabella Gaskins; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Lyle; brother, Dale Shumate and wife Julie of Hays; five sisters, Reba McGrady, Carolyn Shepherd, Gail Shepherd and husband Darrell all of Hays, Patricia Brooks and husband Rick of Kentucky, Shelia Davis and husband Harley of Boomer and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at Dehart Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Hall, Elder Eddie Lyle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Dehart Baptist Church from 12:00 until 1:30 o’clock on Tuesday, prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Dehart Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2379 Dehart Church Road, McGrady, NC 28649. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
