Read More	Obituary From “The Ottumwa Courier,” Wednesday, October 20, 2004: BLAKESBURG – Lester “Les” Owens, 88, formerly of 9942 240th Avenue, died at 10:05 p.m. Oct. 18, 2004, in Ottumwa. He was born Nov. 13, 1915 to Guff and Laura May Morgan Owens in Cincinnati. He married Mary Byers, Sept. 6, 1947. She preceded him in death April 23, 1998. He had resided in the Ottumwa area most of his life and had resided in California in the 1960s. He served with the U.S. Army Calvary from 1936 to 1942 and with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945 serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He had been employed with John Deere Ottumwa Works for 21 years, retiring in 1978 from Department 73, Electrical Maintenance and Pipe Fitters. Survivors include a granddaughter, who was raised in his home, Kylee (Norman) Brown of Ottumwa; a great-grandson, who was raised in his home, Mark (Brandy) Aldinger of Blakesburg; stepdaughter, Lois (George) Van Dorin of Branson, Mo.; two sisters, Bernice Eakins and Neta Pickrell [sic] both of Arkansas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Earl, Winford, Clevy [sic] and Glen Owens; and two sisters, Armenta Zotz and Merl Herrod [sic]. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with the Rev. Loyd Osborn officiating. Burial with military services by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion will be in Shaul Cemetery. Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present from 6-7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
