Description	:	Lester McDowell Harris, 70, of Route 2, Ararat, died Thursday, August 18, at the VA Medical Center in Salem. He was born in Patrick County November 10, 1923, and was a son of the late Martin Luther and Lilla Palmer Harris. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred H. Moore and brothers Monroe Harris and Lowell Harris. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and served during World War II in the European, African, Middle Eastern Theater of operations as part of the 179th infantry. Harris was retired from Mitchell Howell Ford in Martinsville and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Velma Boyd Harris of the home; three daughters, Terry Harris of Matthews, N.C., Sandra Montgomery of Richmond and Tina Smith of Harrisburg, N.C.; five sons, Barry Harris of Mount Airy, N.C., Bill Harris of Winston-Salem, N.C., David Pratt of Woodlands, Tex. and Michael Pratt of Alexandria, two sisters, Elizabeth Shoemaker and Mary Virginia Harris, both of Martinsville, one brother, Joseph M.
