Les was born June 28, 1925, in rural Greene County, Iowa, the first child of Lou and Isabel Anderson. A child of the Great Depression, Les and his family moved from farm to farm frequently as he was growing up. A good and popular student, Les graduated from Beaver high School in 1944 as Class President. Les was always curious about how things worked. He enjoyed and made a long career of working on cars. He once bought a VW Beetle just so he could tinker with it. He was often asked to fix other machines and enjoyed the challenge. Norma said he could fix almost anything. After high school he met, and after a “too-long” engagement, married Norma Jean Miller on June 16, 1951. They had just celebrated 69 years of marriage before his death. Two sons, Larry and Jim, were born to their union. One of his greatest achievements was a good marriage; it was a true partnership, with mutual respect, self-giving love, and faithfulness. Les was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, first at Ogden Community Methodist and then at First United Methodist in Boone. He served on many committees of the church, was a member of Methodist Men, and sang in the choir for about 50 years. He enjoyed singing and was a member of the Pilot Mound Men’s Chorus; later he sang with his friends in a men’s quartet. Les was an avid baseball fan. He loved the Cleveland Indians as a boy because of his admiration for Bob Feller. He took the family every summer to Minnesota for a Twins game. But he was a longtime fan of the Chicago Cubs. He and Norma spent many hours in the bleachers watching their sons play countless ball games. They also supported their sons’ musical and other activities. Les took pride in his work and was respected for the quality of his work and his work relationships – both could be relied on. He worked as a mechanic, then machinist, auto parts counter man and finally manager of the Boone NAPA store. In his retirement Les enjoyed playing golf. He and Norma also took many trips around the country. He was an avid reader, especially of American history and western novels. He enjoyed woodworking and crafted many fine pieces as gifts for family. His curiosity extended to the advent of the computer age, and he was adept at using the home computer. He applied this interest to his role as secretary-treasurer of the Boone Lion’s Club, of which he was a member for many years. In his final years Les suffered the effects of Lewy body disease, which gradually eroded his physical and cognitive abilities. He accepted his affliction with uncommon grace and maintained until the end his awareness and capacity to relate to his family and caregivers. He will be remembered for his integrity, honesty, fidelity, curiosity, intelligence, humor, devotion to family, and community-minded spirit. He was a person of sincere faith, expressed with actions more than words. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Darlene; and his brother, Donald. Those left to carry his memory are his wife Norma; sons: Larry (Linda) of Newton and Jim (Tammy) of Boone; sister Belva Riegel of Des Moines; brother Gerald (Janice) of Ogden; grandchildren: Jenny Anderson (Cory Giesking), Brian Anderson, Beth (Cody) Anderson Bowers, and Katie (Devin) Anderson Madsen; step-grandchildren Daniel Hudson and Brett (Erin) Hudson of Boone; and great-granddaughter, Carly Mauck of Rosemount, MN..
