Description	:	Mrs. Lestina Z. Carney who died last week at St. Peter's hospital, Olympia, was a pioneer of Thurston county, her father Syrus Hines, having come to the county in 1855. During the time of the Indian war, they were part of the band that crowded together in the blockhouse. Mrs. Carney had been married twice, her first husband moving to Elma where he died. Carney who died last week at St. Peter's hospital, Olympia, was a pioneer of Thurston county, her father Syrus Hines, having come to the county in 1855. During the time of the Indian war, they were part of the band that crowded together in the blockhouse. Mrs. Carney had been married twice, her first husband moving to Elma where he died. She had been separated from her second husband. Her two daughters, Mrs. Geo. Simpson and Miss Mamie Eaton were with her during the last hours and took the body to her home at Elma for burial. Besides her daughters, Mrs. Carney leaves two sons. Her brother, who resides in Portland is a prominent man of the city. At present, he is the secretary of the Oregon Pioneer Historical society. Washington Standard 27 December 1901, page 3 == Mrs. Lestina Z. Carney, who died at the hospital Tuesday night, was a pioneer by birth. She was a daughter of Tyrus Himes, one of our oldest settlers, and a sister of Geo. H. Himes of Portland. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Geo. Simpson and Miss Mamie Eaton, by her first husband. She likewise leaves two sons. The body of the deceased was taken to Elma, her home, for burial. Eighteen years ago the family again settled in this valley, and Mrs. Hallett had lived here ever since.
