Description	:	Leta Virginia Hanks was born to Fred Carl and Ethel Molly (Ward) Hanks on November 28, 1927 at Tilford, South Dakota. Her childhood was spent in Pleasant Valley, attending school and graduating from Sturgis High School. Leta was a schoolteacher for a year or two in a one-room school in Meade County. On June 15, 1949 Leta married Marvin Hettich at Hot Springs, South Dakota. By 1950 they had settled on a farm one mile north of Loyalton where they remained until Marvin’s passing in 2009. Her childhood was spent in Pleasant Valley, attending school and graduating from Sturgis High School. Leta was a schoolteacher for a year or two in a one-room school in Meade County. On June 15, 1949 Leta married Marvin Hettich at Hot Springs, South Dakota. By 1950 they had settled on a farm one mile north of Loyalton where they remained until Marvin’s passing in 2009. Her six children grew up on this farm and later on she welcomed grandchildren as her family continued to expand. Countless guests enjoyed Leta’s hospitality over the years; there was always room for one more! Leta was a legendary multi-tasker, keeping the home fires burning while checking on the cattle, taking lunch out to the field, and getting parts from town all masterfully timed to get everything done. Leta passed away peacefully on July 4 at the Golden Living Center in Ipswich. She is survived by her children: Muriel Thorne, Jocelyn (William) Barlow, Winnette Crete, Norman (Diana) Hettich, and Elaine (Nicolas) White. She is lovingly remembered by her 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her many nieces and nephews have fond memories of their Aunt Leta. Leta was predeceased by all her sisters: Amy, Doris, and Ruby, by her husband, Marvin, her son Gregory, and her son-in-law Pete Thorne. Adapted from Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home obituary
