Read More	Levi Burkholder Weber was born on March 24, 1911 in Chester, Chesterfield County, VA. He went peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, September 24, 2010. Levi spent his earliest years in the area of Chester and Amelia, VA, then moved with his family to Lancaster County, PA. Late in life, he wrote four books (the Possum Hollow series) recounting his experiences as a child growing up in rural Virginia and Pennsylvania in a Mennonite farming family. In his twenties, he moved to the Denbigh area of Newport News and spent the rest of his life as an active member of the Mennonite community there. There he met June Elizabeth Burkholder whom he married on February 26, 1939. They had been married for 66 years when she died on March 31, 2005. When Levi married, he was operating a small commercial greenhouse in Denbigh. After selling that, he purchased an egg wholesale business combined with a commercial locker plant and butchering operation based in Kilmarnock, VA. In a few years, he sold that business as well and spent most of his working years as a home builder and real estate developer and, finally, a real estate broker. Levi was generous with time and money and devoted his energies to the work and principles of the Mennonite Church. He organized a weekly radio program called The Rock of Ages and coordinated its production by the Warwick River Mennonite Church community for 18 years. He was also active in the organization and early development of the Mennowood Retirement Community and served on the board of directors there for 13 years. Levi was a working member of Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA). Around the world in developing countries, MEDA provides investment, technical, consulting, and management services to local individuals and small businesses to help people earn sustainable livelihoods. Levi had a special interest in African countries, and served as Chairman of the Congo Committee of MEDA for several years, visiting countries in both eastern and western Africa several times to coordinate MEDA efforts. Levi was deeply interested in the colonial archaeology of the Denbigh area. During his development of houses and lots in the old Denbigh Plantation, he discovered several very old building foundations. He asked Ivor Noel Hume, archaeologist at Colonial Williamsburg, to investigate them. One of the foundations proved to be that of Mathews Manor, dating to 1626, and thought to have disappeared. Hume characterized archaeological finds at the Mathews Manor site as some of the best that have been found for that period of American colonial history. Artifacts recovered from the Denbigh Plantation area are now on display in historical museums in Newport News and Colonial Williamsburg, and the Mathews Manor site has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Levi was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, June Elizabeth Burkholder. He is survived by three children, Richard of Oxford, PA (wife Roberta), Kenneth of Portland, ME, and Helen of Seattle, WA. He is also survived by one brother, Henry of Lititz, PA, and one sister, Betty Springer of Goshen, IN. Visitation will be held at Warwick River Mennonite Church, Newport News, VA on Saturday, October 2, from 1:30 to 2:30, followed by a memorial service at 3:00. Burial will be private.
