Votaw, a veteran of the Civil War, responded to the last call and died at his home in Guilford on Thursday evening at 8 o'clock. Deceased was in his 82nd year, and would have been 83 if he had lived till the 22nd of May. He was for over four years a member of the 6th Ohio cavalry and saw much service in the army of the Potomac. His death removes the last member of the Moses Votaw family. There were few better known men than he in the locality, and he stood high in the estimation of the community as a man or probity and honor, patriotic and true in all the relations of life. He is survived by four sons and one daughter, Mrs. Frank Ingram of Salem; Charles of Salem; John of Pittsburgh; Elmer and Morris of Guilford. The funeral took place Saturday afternoon in Woodsdale cemetery. THE SALEM NEWS [Salem, OH] Friday - March 2, 1917; Page 5 Obituary for Levi Miller Votaw LEVI M. VOTAW Levi M. Votaw, aged 82 years, a veteran of the Civil War and a lifelong resident of Guilford where he was engaged in farming, died at his home there at 8 o'clock Thursday evening following a brief illness, death being due to complications. Deceased was born in Guilford, May 22, 1834, and spent his entire life there. He was a member of Trescott post No. 10, G.A.R., of Salem, and served four years with Co. C, Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. One sister, Mrs. Mary Ingram, of Salem, and four brothers, Morris, of Guilford; John, of Pittsburgh; Emerson, at home, and Charles, of this city, survive. Funeral service over the remains will be held at the late home in Guilford at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Interment will be made at Woodsdale. NOTE: There is one mistake in this obituary. The survivors listed are his children, not his brothers and sister.
