This model farmer and representative citizen is a native of Stanstard, Canada, where he was born on July 12, 1835. When two years old he was taken to St. Lawrence county, New York, where, he grew to manhood's estate and received his education. His early life was spent in close touch with nature on the farm and while still a mere youth he learned to appreciate the true value and dignity of honest toil. In 1856, shortly after attaining his majority, he went to Green county, Wisconsin, where he resumed farm labor, and after remaining about ten years in that state, he moved to Hardin county, Iowa, and bought a part of the place in Ellis township on which he now lives. His first purchase consisted of eighty acres, which cost him five dollars per acre, the only improvements at that time being a small house which served as a fairly comfortable shelter until replaced by a more commodious edifice some years later. Among the first of Mr. Lord's labors on his farm was the planting of quite a number of maple, cottonwood, catalpa and other varieties of trees, which have since grown to large size, affording all the wood and timber needed. besides yielding grateful shade and adding much to the beauty of the home. By persevering industry and good management Mr. Lord was enabled, in 1875, to add one hundred and sixty acres to his original purchase, paying for the latter at the rate of nine dollars per acre. He inaugurated a series of improvements which were carried to completion as rapidly as circumstances would admit, and his progress as a tiller of the soil has been steady and in every respect commendable. By a successful system of tile drainage, consisting of over three thousand rods already laid, he has greatly enhanced the productiveness of the soil and every year he aims to extend the tiling until every part of the farm is reached and benefited by it. His dwelling is a commodious modern edifice, plentifully supplied with comforts and conveniences; his barns and outbuildings are substantial and in good repair, his fences in similar condition, and everything about the premises is very conveniently arranged. By judicious expenditure he has added a number of labor-saving devices, among which is the large gas engine which furnishes motive power for pumping water, churning butter, sawing wood, and operating various other kinds of farm machinery. Mr. Lord raises considerable live stock, all the corn raised on the farm being fed to the cattle and hogs which he fattens for the market and from the sale of which he receives a large share of his earnings. He keeps a number of fine cows selected with special reference to their value as milk producers and from this source his income is also considerably augmented. In brief, he is a man of great industry, sound judgment and rare foresight and his success since coming to Iowa entitles him to a conspicuous place among the leading farmers and representative men of the township honored by his citizenship. He has well grounded convictions and explicit views on the questions and issues of the times, though by no means a politician or aspirant for official honors. He votes his principles regardless of party and in local affairs gives his support to candidates who in his judgment are best fitted to fill the offices to which they aspire. On November 27, 1862, in Green county, Wisconsin, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Adaline Hills (nee Walters), who was born in Trumbull county, Iowa, and moved with her parents to Wisconsin when about six years old, the parents having been pioneers of that state. By her previous marriage she had two children: Vina, wife of J.N. Drury, of Rockwell City, Iowa, and Chloe, who married James Barber, a resident of that town also. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Lord consists of four children, namely: W.P., a paint dealer of Des Moines; Harry L., who manages the home farm, married Edith Bowers and is the father of four children as follows: Ray, Nelson, Marion and Howard; May, the fourth of the subject's children, is the wife of J.W. Woodward, and lives in the city of Des Moines; Laura, the youngest, married W.G. Cunningham, a business man of Somerset, Pennsylvania. Some years since: Mr. Lord turned his farm over to his son and is now living in honorable retirement. Though no longer under the necessity of laboring, he still looks after his business interests, which are considerable and he keeps in touch with matters on the estate. He is popular in his community and ranks high as a neighbor and citizen. -------------------------
