OBITUARY - Levi Swaim, 81 years old and a resident of Appanoose county almost all his life, passed away at his home in Moravia, Friday afternoon, December 5th, his last illness being of but a few days' duration. Mr. Swaim was known to his many acquaintances and friends as a devout christian man. He was one of the community's best citizens and his death is deeply mourned by many. Levi Swaim was born August 9, 1849 in Cole county, Illinois While a wee child he came with his parents to Appanoose county, Iowa, and settled on a farm near Unionville, in which locality he has lived since, with the exception of two years which were spent in Missouri. Uncle Levi was an industrious worker, and as good as most anyone with the same advantages and opportunity to finance their business in a profitable way. He and his good wife went into the timber a good many years ago and hewed them out a farm, out of which he made a beautiful homey home where by frugality and toiling together they were able to raise their family of children in comfort. In 1869 Uncle Levi was united in marriage with Miss Matilda Jane Boyer near Unionville, Ia. To this union were born 11 children: William of Webb, Ia., Mrs. Emma Tadlock, of Moravia; Mrs. Josephine Schley of Lusk, Wyoming; Frank, Mrs. Mary Wills, Mrs. Grace Main, all of Moravia; Clarence of Drakesville, Ia., Austin of Ottumwa, Ia., Mrs. Rosa Ogden of Sedro Wooley, Washington; Robert having passed away at the age of 18 years, and Johnnie was called home in infancy. The good wife and mother passed away three years ago, April 12, 1927. Uncle Levi was converted while a young man in his teens and first united with the M. E. church at Unionville and soon afterward became a charter member of the U.B. church in the Liberty schoolhouse out of which grew the Liberty United Brethren church, where he continued to hold membership until he moved to Moravia in the year 1912 at which time he united with this church to which he has been faithful and loyal in attendance and support even at a sacrifice. He leaves to mourn their loss nine children, a number of grandchildren, three brothers, two sisters, many loyal neighbors and friends, who have always held him in the highest respect. Uncle Levi is at home, aged 81 years, 3 months and 24 days. Funeral services were held from the United Brethren church, Sunday, Dec. 7th, at 2 p.m., Rev. D. W. Thompson, a former pastor, officiating. Interment was made in the Moravia cemetery.
