Read More	The Osceola Tribune, Osceola, Iowa June 03, 1947, Page 1 20 Foot Fall Into Well Is Fatal To Woodburn man Lewis Waugh, 76, Drowns Following Accidental-Fall Monday Night; Body Submerged in 7 Feet Of Water Lewis Waugh, 76-year old Woodburn resident, died Monday evening from an accidental fall into a 20-foot well on a property adjoining his home there. Cause of death was given as drowning. He had been working around the place and when he failed to come to the house for supper a search was instituted by the family. During this search the well was found to be uncovered, and inasmuch as he was nowhere else nearby it was surmised he could have fallen or stumbled down the well shaft. A call was put out for the Woodburn fire department, and lowering a ladder into the well, J. P. Tomlinson, the local fire chief, descended and discovered Waugh's body submerged in the seen feet of water there. Brought to the surface, resuscitation efforts failed and he was pronounced dead. Dr. Bowen of Woodburn, who had been called, stated Waugh had died from drowning and estimated death had occurred about two hours previously. The deceased had been renovating a vacant house, which he had rented, on the property where the well was located. He returned from town about four o'clock went about his evening work and had not been seen following that time. It was assumed that the well cover could have been removed by children playing in the neighborhood, or that he had removed it himself and had lost his balance and fallen in while examining its state of repair. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Josephine Waugh; five sons, Lloyd of Derby, Roy of Woodburn, Herman of Osceola, Wade of Gresham, Ore., and Wayne of Boring, Ore,; two brothers, Ambrose of Woodburn and Carl of Chariton; and three sisters, Cora Wheeler of Red Oak, Lena Souders of Des Moines, and Joan Jeanette Mason of Woodburn. The body is at the Miller funeral home, pending funeral arrangements, and friends may obtain the time of services by calling there. Waugh and Mr, and Mrs. Wayne Johnston and daughter, Sherry of Edinburg, Ind., spent the past week in the home of their niece and cousin, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Cole and family and with other relatives and friends. they attended the funeral of Lewis Waugh at Woodburn on Saturday. The Osceola Tribune, Osceola, Iowa June 17, 1947, Page 7 Obituary Lewis Allen Waugh Lewis Allen Waugh, son of Charles and Mary Waugh was born November 13, 1870 in Clarke county, where he spent the greater part of his life. He passed away June 2, 1947 at the age of 76 years and 6 mo. He was one of eight children; 5 girls and 3 boys. Two sisters preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to Anna Powell Feb. 19, 1896. To this union was born 8 children, Lloyd of Derby, Roy of Lucas, Herman of Osceola, Wayne and Wade of Oregon; His wife preceded him in death in 1925 and daughter Geneva James in 1936. Two children died in infancy. Early in life he was converted and became a member of the United Brethren church. In 1927 he was united in marriage to Mary Josephine Cline. They lived near Woodburn until 1934 when they moved to their present home in Woodburn where they lived until his death. He leaves to mourn besides his widow and children, - two step children, Pearl and Twyla Cline; two brothers, Carl of Chariton and Ambrose of Woodburn; three sisters, Cora Wheeler of Red Oak, Lena Sowders of Des Moines and Josie Mason of Woodburn; 15 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. He was a kind and loving husband and father. A friend and neighbor who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. Funeral services were held from the Miller Funeral home in Osceola, Thursday, June 5, at 2:30 p. m. with the Rev. Virgil C. Swanson of Chariton officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. John R. Evans and Mrs. Wayne Woods. Mrs. Floyd Powell presided at the piano. Those from a distance attending the funeral were: Mrs. Cora Wheeler, Red oak; Mrs. Lena Sowders, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Orion Waugh, Indiana; Mr. and Mrs. Perle Cline, Omaha and Miss Twyla Cline, New York. Card of Thanks We are sincerely grateful to friends and neighbors for their many acts of sympathy during our sad bereavement. Our appreciation cannot be adequately expressed.
