Read More	Son of Lewis and Anna (Thomas) Byrd Husband of Myrtle Doty Father of Mona, Elizabeth, Myrtle and Lewis {NOTE: The following obituary is known to contain errors, but is transcribed verbatim for historical reasons} Lewis Byrd, Of Pioneer Family, Dies Lewis A Byrd Sr, 85, son of Andrew K. Byrd who founded the first mill in the Puget Sound country, died Sunday. He was born in Tacoma and had lived here all his life, his home being at 1101 E. 46th St. Mr. Byrd's grandparents, Adam and Mary Byrd of Wisconsin, came to this area by covered wagon in 1852. They took a donation claim at the head of Chambers Creek where the creek flows from Steilacoom Lake. The stream then was known as "Steilacoom River" and the lake was called "Byrd's Lake." His father, Andrew, dammed the creek at the lake outlet, raising the level of the water, and in 1853 built a sawmill, using water power, which cut lumber for shipment as far as San Francisco. Four years later a grist mill was built from which a grindstone is now a Byrd Mill monument on the grounds of Fern Hill Branch Library. The deceased had been active in the affairs of the Byrd Clan organization and the Pierce County and Historical Association. He and Mrs. Byrd for some years were grocers in South Tacoma. He was a former employe in the advertising department of The News Tribune and later was an employe of North Pacific Plywood Co., where he retired. The Byrds celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1963. Mrs. Byrd died in 1967. Survivors include a son, Lewis Jr. of Tacoma; two daughters, Mrs. Mona Warner, of the home, and Mrs. Myrtle N. Oksness, of Kirkland; a brother, John, of Seattle; a sister, Mrs. Chester Humphrey, of Lakebay; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services are announced by Piper Funeral Home.
