Lewis (Louis) Bryant Warrick was born on November 27, 1856, and was the son of William Henry and Zilphia Odom Warrick. He lived his whole life in the Grantham Township of Wayne County, North Carolina, and is a direct descendant of one of the oldest families in Wayne County, the Job Warrick's. His father, William, was a farmer and farmed nearby to other Warrick family members until he enlisted in the military to fight in the Civil War. On February 26, 1865, his Willam died of smallpox in Elmira, N.Y., prison camp. Nine-year-old Lewis was left to carry out many of the responsibilities that his father would have done to help provide for the family. By 1870, according to the U.S.Census Report, Lewis was ten years old and living with his mother, his older sister, Susan, and his younger sister, Tempy. They must have lived near Coleman Jarred (Jart) & Mary Jane Warrick Hudson in Grantham because they are on the same census sheet. Mary Jane Warrick was the half-sister of his father, and she was also the mother of his future wife. 1880, Lewis continued to provide for his older sister, Susan and mother until his mother's death in 1882. There on the land, she was the first to be laid to rest in the family cemetery, now named after Lewis, called Louis Brayt Warrick Family Cemetery. Ten years later, at the age of thirty-five, he married twenty-two-year-old Sarah (Sallie or Sally) Jane Hudson on January 21, 1891. Together they farmed and raised their nine children on the land that he had inherited from his parents. According to Benjamin "Col Warrick," Ashley Warrick's family notes, "Little Lewis" was a short man and a drinking man." By 1920, there may have already been some domestic tension brewing because the U.S. Census reported Sally as the head, along with five children and one grandchild. They were living in Grantham and were renting. On January 17, 1925, (what was published? A notice?) published in the Goldsboro News-Argus Superior Court Calendar, Sallie vs. L.B. Warrick, could have been Sallie filing for divorce. On December 11, 1926, his son Garlie got mad at Lewis for bailing out a man arrested for using profane language in front of his family. Two stories have been told about the event that took place on that Saturday. One account says that the argument escalated to Garley chasing his father with a knife, and Lewis, fearing his life, shot his son Garley in which the bullet penetrated his side. The other account was that Lewis shot his son from his front porch. Garley was rushed to the hospital in Goldsboro but unfortunately died at midnight. Lewis was arrested the next day by Sheriff Grant, placed in the Wayne County jail, and bail was set at $5,000.00. The decision to release him with a bond until Superior court convened was changed after Coroner Robinson learned that Lewis had threatened other people. Lewis requested to be released to attend his son's funeral, but his request was denied. The event made newspaper headlines across North Carolina. At the age of seventy, in February of 1927, Lewis was convicted for manslaughter and sentenced to serve three to five years at Caledonia State Prison Farm in Halifax County, N.C. Lewis was released from prison before the 1930 U.S. Census. At the time of the Census, his son, Junius (Junie) Vanderbilt, had died from pneumonia, and Lewis was living with Junie's widow, Minnie Holloman Warrick, and their four children; Clovie, Eula, Ezekiel, and Sallie. Five years later, on 27 November 1935, Lewis (Louis) Bryant Warrick died at seventy-seven from complications of a stroke that led him to suffer from paralysis for four months. Sallie survived him; as did three daughters, Mrs.Charlie Jensen and Mrs. Berton Pritchard of New York, and Mrs. H.M. Sanford of Goldsboro; four sons, Emmett, Leroy, Coleman, and Mallie Warrick, all of Grantham. The Rev. E.L. Parker conducted the services at Falling Creek Baptist Church, and the interment was at the family cemetery, where he was laid to rest beside his mother. Sally remained very close to their children and took time staying with them until her death 18 years after Lewis's, in 1957. She especially liked to stay with her two daughters who lived in the state of New York. Interestingly, Lewis's death certificate claimed that he was a widower and that his wife was unknown. Warrick, 77, died at his home in Grantham Township at 4 a.m. Friday, having suffered a stroke of paralysis four months ago, which developed into complications. His Widow survives him; three daughters, Mrs. Charlie Jensen and Mrs. Burt Pritchard of New York City, and Mrs. H.M. Sanford of Goldsboro; four sons, Emmett, Leroy, Coleman, and Mallie Warrick, all of Grantham. Funeral services will be conducted from home at three o'clock Saturday afternoon by the Rev: E.L: Parker, Falling Creek Baptist Church.
