Dec 21, 1946 - Carroll Times - Death, attributed to excitement and shock following a traffic mishap on Highway 30 west of Carroll early last evening, claimed the life of Lewis Heider, head of the Bell Transfer & Storage company. He died about 9 p.m. at his home, 709 North Adams street, only a few minutes after he had arrived there. Mr. Heider and Lawrence Lampe were coming into Carroll from Omaha with two loads of freight, Lampe driving one truck and Heider following him in another. Because of the extremely icy roads, both were driving slowly. Lampe said that when he was on the "Arcadia divide", he shifted into low gear in passing a car that was stalled crosswise at the foot of the hill. Heider, coming over the hill, applied his brakes when he saw the stalled car. His truck turned around about three times on the pavement before heading for the ditch and stopping with a rear wheel hanging over the grade. According to Lampe, he and Wilbur Pluckhahn, who was riding with Heider, put out flares before pulling Heider's truck back onto the highway. However, a car bearing an Oregon license plate came over the hill and slipped into the Heider truck before it was pulled back onto the pavement. Slight damage resulted from this mishap. By this time, Heider was too distraught to drive his truck, so he was replaced by another driver and was taken to his home, where his death occurred. He died on his 65th birthday anniversary. Funeral services are to be at 9 o'clock Monday morning at St. Joseph church. The body is at the Huffman Funeral home, where the rosary, led by the Rt. Rev. Monsignor P.T. Lynch, will be prayed at 8 o'clock tomorrow night. Mr. Heider, part owner of the Bell Transfer & Storage company, had headed the firm since 1935. He was in partnership with Lawrence Lampe. A member of a well-known pioneer family, he was born December 20, 1881, at Mendota, Illinois, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Heider. Fifty-five years ago the family came from Illinois to live on a farm south of Arcadia. Mr. Heider had lived in this community since that time. He was preceded in death by a son, Earl, February 17, 1937; his parents; one sister, Mrs. Edward Killeen (Mary), Carroll; three brothers: Dr. Edward Heider, Chicago; Joe Heider, Manning; and J.W. Heider of Carroll, who died June 22, 1946. His surviving sisters and brother are: Mrs. J V. Hamilton (Emma) and Miss Laura Heider, both of Omaha, and Oscar E. Heider, Arcadia.
