Description	:	Lewis David Barker was born on March 21, 1843, on Mt. Desert Island, to David Barker and Clarinda A. Clark. The family moved west in 1860. In April of 1862, David enlisted at Rockport Missouri, a private in Company D of the 5th Missouri Cavalry commanded by Colonel Yenick. In 1863, David enlisted as a private in the Company of Independent Scouts for the 2nd Nebraska and were employed by General Sully who was sent to war against the Sioux in Dakota Territory. David participated in the Battle of White Stone Hill and the Battle of the Killdeer Mountains. While... Read More	Lewis David Barker was born on March 21, 1843, on Mt. Desert Island, to David Barker and Clarinda A. Clark. The family moved west in 1860. In April of 1862, David enlisted at Rockport Missouri, a private in Company D of the 5th Missouri Cavalry commanded by Colonel Yenick. In 1863, David enlisted as a private in the Company of Independent Scouts for the 2nd Nebraska and were employed by General Sully who was sent to war against the Sioux in Dakota Territory. David participated in the Battle of White Stone Hill and the Battle of the Killdeer Mountains. While in the Dakotas, he left his name engraved on a sandstone rock on the prairie, which still exists. It reads: "L.D. Barker Sully's Nebraska Scouts July 26,1864." David married Esther Olive Hathaway on October 24, 1867 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. They had four children: Willis W., Walter V., Arthur, and ?. In 1870 the family moved to homestead in Monroe Precinct, Saline County, NB. In 1875 David was elected county clerk and moved the family to Pleasant Hill, NB. In 1878 they moved yet again to a farm on Turkey Creek near Crete. David was a cartoonist for the local county papers. Known as the "Jack Knife Cartoonist." He was elected to the State Senate as a Democrat in 1882 and served one term. He was an active member of United Brethren Church, Pleasant Hill. He died on August 7, 1901.
