Services were held Wednesday, February 20, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating. Interment was in the Kadoka Cemetery. Lewis Edward Grimes, better known as Louie, was born October 14, 1918, at Gregory, SD the son of Everett and Eva Mae Grimes. He grew up on a ranch and received his education in rural schools in the Belvidere area. At the age of 14, he began working for various ranchers in the Belvidere area. As a young man, he lived in a line camp in the unfenced Weta Basin area where he rode on cattle for neighboring ranchers. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 10th Mountain Division. He sailed for Italy on Christmas Eve. His unit packed supplies with horses and mules through the Alps. After his discharge, he was united in marriage to Elsie Peterson in November 1945 in Cheyenne, WY. They established a ranch in the Weta area where they raised their three children. Over time, they were able to expand the ranch and have a heritage to pass on to their children and grandchildren. One of the things he took pride in was making and riding good horses. He could make an average horse into a good one and a good one into a great one. One of his greatest pleasures was roping. He was one of the founding members of the Rodeo Bible Camp, which allowed him to share his passion for rodeo and helping young people. Louie was fortunate enough to have his health and was able to work on the ranch until the day he died. One of his greatest pleasures in later life was the time spent with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Kadoka, and the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association. Survivors include two sons, Tom Grimes of Kadoka and Jerry Grimes and his wife, Merilee, of Kadoka; one daughter, Jeanie Kingsbury and her husband, John, of Pine Island, MN; four grandchildren, Stacy Green and her husband, Tucker, Levi Grimes and his wife, Elissa, Austin Grimes and his wife, Jessica Jean, and Megan Kingsbury; three great-grandchildren, Lane Green and Jackson and Jordan Grimes; one brother, Lornce Grimes of Interior; and a host of other relatives and friends. Louie was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, on June 8, 2005; a granddaughter, Jessica Ray Grimes on April 9, 2006; his parents; one brother, John Grimes; and a sister, Opal Thompson.
