Description	:	LEWIS GAULTER is a native of France, born October 28, 1817, a son of Loren and Julia Gaulter, both of whom died in their native country many years ago. At the age of thirteen years our subject was apprenticed to a sea captain, and for twenty-four years followed a seafaring life, all of that time being on a merchant vessel from Bath, Maine. Read More	LEWIS GAULTER is a native of France, born October 28, 1817, a son of Loren and Julia Gaulter, both of whom died in their native country many years ago. At the age of thirteen years our subject was apprenticed to a sea captain, and for twenty-four years followed a seafaring life, all of that time being on a merchant vessel from Bath, Maine. He visited the East Indies three times, and has been to China and Japan, and all parts of South America, and in fact has visited most of the prominent sea-port cities in the world. His last ten years on the ocean was in the capacity of first mate, and on leaving he was offered a vessel if he would continue in the service, but being anxious to settle down in life he resolved to leave the ocean. For his wife he married Miss Harriet E. Morgan, in Hancock County, Illinois. She was born in London, England, February 8, 1828, but from her fourteenth year she lived in America. To them were born eleven children -- Lewis B. and Loren, energetic and enterprising young men, have purchased 320 acres near their father's farm, in Iowa, where they expect to make their future home; Harriet, lives in Minnesota; Sarah lives in Montana; Phoebe and Lizzie (twins); Julia, William, Alexander, Emma and Louisa. Mr. Gaulter lived in Illinois for one year after his marriage, and in 1847 came to Decatur County, Iowa. The year following he came to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and soon after removed to New Orleans, where he remained until 1850. He then crossed the plains by the old emigrant trial, and made his home near Salt Lake City, where he followed farming till 1860. He then went to Montana, and engaged in mining, stock-raising and general farming, remaining there till October, 1882, when he became a resident of Fayette Township, buying the property known as the Riggs Pioneer Farm, which he still owns and occupies. His residence is on section 21, Fayette Township, where he has 100 acres of choice land. In politics Mr. Gaulter is a Republican. Louis Gaulter, the oldest citizen of Lamoni, is dead. He was 96 years old. He was a seaman for twenty years.
