BENKELMAN NEWS CHRONICLE This community was shocked to learn of the death of Lewis G. Van Buskirk tuesday morning, he having passed away during the night after a brief illness of only five days, of pneumonia, which disease he contracted on Wednesday, May 23. Three doctors were in attendance toward the last and all that medical skill could do to save him proved of no avail, and at 1:05 Tuesday morning he breathed his last. The funeral services were held at the Mothodist church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. of which lodge the deceased was a member and were conducted by Rev. J.R. Kyle of the United Presbyterian church. The church was packed with realtives and friends of the deceased, who came to pay thier respects and share their grief with the bereaved wife and children and other relatives. Interment took place in Benkelman Cemetery. Lewis George Van Buskirk was born in Culbertson, Neb., August 17, 1881. and died May 29, 1917, aged 35 years, 9 months and 12 days. Shortly after his birth his parents moved to a farm near Benkelman, where he resided until he attained his majority, when he moved to Greeley, Colorado, where he spent about five years. On December 21, 1904, he was united in marriage with Miss Mabel Dorothy Smith of Greeley. To this union six children were born, four boys and two girls. They are Edna, Robert, Reuben, Fredrick, Mary and Leonard, who passed away June 30, 1913. Shortly after his marriage he moved back to Benkelman, where he resided till the time of his death. In addition to his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his loss his father and mother, Alonzo J. and Mary Belle Van Buskirk of Greeley, Colo. and brothers Walter H. of Benkelman, Irl John and Roy Verne of Greeley, Colo. and sisters Mrs. Gertrude G. Elledge of Bakersfield, Calif., Mrs. L. Cooperrider of Greeley, Mrs. Chloe E. Adkinson and Mrs. Cleo L. Randel of Benkelman, all of whom were here to attend the funeral with the exception of Mrs. Elledge, besides the large number of near realtives and friends. Three brothers, Charles, Ole and Willard, preceeded him to the other world. When about 12 years old, he professed conversion at a revival meeting at the Methodist church of Benkelman but did not take up full membership, but in 1903 he united with the Methodist church of Greeley,Colo., from which church his membership was not transferred. He was an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and also the Modern Woodmen, in which he carried $1000 insurance. He was an industrious, hard working man, a good provider in the home and a good neighbor among his townsmen. For the last few years he had suffered a great deal of inflammatory rheumatism, which affected his health and made him an easy victim of the dread disease which he contracted. The News-Chronicle joins the many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved ones.
