In 1910 he and his parents and five siblings--all but Clarence--lived on a farm they owned, with a mortgage, in Eliza Township in the same county. In 1920 he and his wife and their two children lived in a house they were renting on Third Street in New Boston, IL. He worked as a laborer. In 1930 he and Eunice and their seven children lived in a house they were renting for $12 a month at 185 Sherman Street in Muscatine, IA. They did not have a radio. He worked as a button cutter in a factory. In 1940 he and his wife and their five youngest children lived in the same house. Their rent was only ten dollars a month after the Great Depression. He worked as a button cutter in a button factory, with an income in 1939 of $507 for 39 weeks of work, and Vivian as a stenographer for an engineering company, with an income in 1939 of $420 for 30 weeks of work. -------- Muscatine (IA) Journal, Monday, April 3, 1972: Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home for Lewis Gritton, 78, of 185 Sherman St., who died at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at the Muscatine General Hospital. Visitation will begin at 7 o'clock this evening at the funeral home. A son of Edward P. and Sarah Minteer Gritton, he was born Oct. 7, 1893 in Muscatine county. A former resident of New Boston, Ill., he had resided here since 1928. Lewis Gritton first married Eunice Mathews on Oct. 15, 1914 at Burlington. She preceded him in death. He married Anna Krieger on Dec. 19, 1959 at Muscatine. Mr. Gritton was a member of the First Christian Church. A former member of the Muscatine Board of Health, he was a retired employee of the International Harvester Co. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Anna Gritton at home; three son's, Dr. Charlie L. Gritton of Henderson, Ky., Paul Gritton of Fort Dodge, Robert E. Gritton of Russellville, Ark.; four daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Evelyn) Elliott, Mrs. Carl (Vivian) Irwin, Mrs. Vernon (Margaret) Webb and Mrs. Clifford (Marjorie) Hintermeister, all of Muscatine; two brothers, Elmer and Joseph Gritton, both of Aledo; one sister, Mrs. Wesley (Pearl) Norton of Joy, 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, two brothers and two sisters. --------- THE MUSCATINE (IA) JOURNAL, April 6, 1972: LEWIS GRITTON--Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home for Lewis Gritton, 78. Rev. William Keller officiated. Mrs. M.D. Jones was the organist. Pallbearers were Bert Gritton, George Gritton, George Wamsley, Wayne Smith, Wesley Norton Jr., and Sterling Meyers. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery.
