At the time of his enlistment, he was 17 years old, 5'6" tall, light hair, blue eyes, and fair complexion. He enlisted in Company E, 4th Regiment, West Virginia Cavalry. Later he served in Company A, 141st Regiment, Ohio National Guard Infantry, and finally in Company G, 189th and 192nd Regiment, Ohio Infantry. When Lewis enrolled in the 189th Regiment at Marietta, Ohio, he stated he was 19 years of age, born in Washington County, Ohio and his occupation was farming. His height was now 5'8" and when mustered, he had 1 Knapsack, 1 Haversack, 1 Canteen, 1 Great coat, strap. The 15th District Ohio Decatur Township, Washington County, Ohio credited him with $100. He was mustered out on September 1, 1865 with his company. The military medical record of Louis states he was hospital hospitalized several times with diphtheria and typhoid fever. His declaration for invalid pension on July 21, 1890, at the age of 44 declared he was partially unable to earn support by reason of sore eyes, deafness in the left ear, rheumatism in right side in hip, leg, in the left shoulder, and loss of teeth. Lorain's personal sketch in the Biographical Souvenir of the Counties of Buffalo, Kearney, Phelps, Harlan, and Franklin, Nebraska published in 1890 advises that he enlisted in 1863 and his first military skirmish was with Moccasin's Rangers. Later he was in the battles of Cedar Creek, Winchester, and Petersburg. He was taken prisoner while under General Hancock in the Shenandoah Valley but was fortunate to escape. After his discharge, he moved to Jersey County, Illinois where he farmed for 10 years. He and his family moved to Nebraska in 1877 taking a Timber Culture Claim and settled in Grant Township, Kearney County where he built a comfortable sod house. At the time, the county had few settlers. Antelope and deer were abundant and occasionally a few buffalo could be found. His 160 acres were well improved including a large variety of fruit trees. He was a firm believer in the principles of the Republican Party and adhered to the party on all state and national matters. The 1885 Grant Township census list: Louis Lorain, wife Mary, son Charles, daughter Minnie, son Craton (sic), 51 acres tilled, 1 acre apple orchard and meadow pasture, 11 acres trees, 97 acres unimproved, the value of farm, land buildings: $2500, farm machinery: $50, livestock: $370, farm products sold, consumed or on hand in 1884: $610. Louis Lorain died on August 19, 1899. His death was the result of a horse kicking him the previous day. He was laid to rest in the Osco Cemetery on Sunday, August 20, 1899. His obituary stated, "It was one of the largest funeral processions ever seen in this part of the county, more than 100 teams." His obituary further stressed his interest in the common schools and the need for the best teachers. His granddaughter, Jessie, and great-great granddaughter would go on to become teachers."
