K. Wood was born in Mason County, Kentucky, Feb. 17, 1819. He was descended from Revolutionary stock. His mother was Emma Scudder, a granddaughter of Nathaniel Scudder, who was a delegate from the colony of New Jersey and signer of the Articles of Confederation. After his arrival in Arcata, he was very active in the affairs of the Union Company, composed of a number of new recruits but led by the returned members of the Gregg Party. In 1852 Mr. Wood ran as an independent for the office of County Clerk of Trinity county of which the county of Humboldt then formed a part. The Democratic candidate was successful. Shortly thereafter, Humboldt county was created by the legislature and Mr. Wood became county clerk to which office he was re-elected in 1855. He declined to be candidate for a third term, and returned to his farm in the present Wood School district near Arcata at the end of 11th street west. This farm was named Ki-we-lat-tah after the Chief of the Humboldt Indians who in the dark days after the discovery of Humboldt had shown himself friendly to the half starved adventurers. June 18th of that year Mr. Wood married Clarisa Sidney Hanna, the daughter James Hanna, the leading lawyer of Eureka, and one of the most brilliant men who had appeared before the Humboldt bar. Miss Ross [Hanna] was a great granddaughter of Betsy Ross. Mr. Wood in his official career was industrious, prompt and energetic. He was conscientious and faithful in the discharge of all his duties, private and public. He was a leading citizen of his community, and was mentioned often for public positions, but repeatedly declined. In his private character he was upright and honest. He was a kind father and a devoted husband. To his friends he proved a companion. He died in Arcata July 12, 1874 , of congestion of the lungs which developed from a severe cold contracted about a week previous. Thus passed away at the age of 55 years, one of Humboldt's most beloved and highly esteemed citizens. He left a family of seven children: Emma S., Ella S., Clarisa S., David, Louis and Mary F. Emma became Emma S. Stinson; Ella, Ella S. Duel; Clarisa. Clarisa S. Foley; Mary, Mary F. Foster (deceased); and Alice became Alice H. Barter. David, one of the widest known of his family is a dairyman in Arcata while L. K. Wood, Jr., is Superintendent of Eureka Harbor and Federal Inspector of Immigration. All of these members of this pioneer family grew to manhood and womanhood in Humboldt county and have always proved themselves useful and honored citizens in the different part of the county where they have made their homes.
