His wife was listed as Minnie Rooks, age 62. His parents were listed as Caleb Rooks and Barbara Ann Janes, both of Kentucky. His son, Ervin reported the information, but his name was spelled Irvin. On the 18th day of June 1880, Lewis' family was recorded in the census in the White Oak Voting Precinct of Adair County. All of them were born in Kentucky. Caleb, his father, who was age 34, was listed as a cabinet maker. His mother, Barbara A, was age 29. Lewis and his siblings were recorded as: Louzella, age 8, daughter; Mary A, age 6, daughter; Louis S, age 4, son; and Arvatella, age 2, daughter. By the 26th of June 1900, Lewis had been married to Minnie Bryant for 3 years and had two children. Both Lewis and Minnie were born in Kentucky and so were the children. They were listed in the White Oak district census as: Lewis S, head, born May 1875, age 25, farmer; Minnie, wife, born October 1879, age 20, had 2 children and both living; Jordon, son, born January 1898, age 2; and Bertha M, daughter, born February 1899, age 1. On the 19th day of April 1910, Lewis and his family was again recorded in the census record. However, since the last record was made, Bertha had died. They were listed as: Lewis, head, age 34, married 13 years; Minnie, age 30, married 13 years, had 6 children but only 5 living; Jordan, son, age 12; Ester, son, age 8; Ida A, age 6; Irvin, son, age 4; and Leslie, son, age 2. Jordan died June 11, 1919. On January 15, 1920, the family was once again recorded in the census record as follows: Lewis S, head, age 44; Minnie, wife, age 39; Ester, son, age 19; Ida, daughter, age 16; Irvin, son, age 14; Leslie, son, age 12; Pearl, daughter, age 9; Robert, son, age 6; Lillie, daughter, age 4 and 8 months; and Dorthy, daughter, age 10 months. Dorthy died at age 7 years, 8 months and five days on January 10, 1926. On April 18, 1930, the family was still in the White Oak voting district. By then most of their children had moved out and started families of their own. Whoever gave the answers to the census taker was obviously guessing at the ages as Lewis had aged 16 years and his wife had aged 18 years in the previous 10 years. The age at marriage was given as 21 for Lewis and 18 for Minnie. That would have been close to accurate knowing that they had been married for three years when the 1900 census was taken. Still living at home with their ages stated low were: Ester, age 26; Leslie, age 19; and Lillie, age 14 (whose age was correct). Also in 1930, they lived next door to Lander Bryant for whom this cemetery is named. ** * Note to self: Mary married a Womack so her children would have been cousins.
