Wertman from David City to Milford, passed through Seward Friday afternoon , services having been held at David City at 2 o'clock, after which the remains were taken to Milford for burial in Blue Mound cemetery. Masonic services were conducted at the grave, and the American Legion firing squad fired a final salute. Lieut. Wertman, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard L. Wertman of David City, formerly of Milford, and the grandson of Mrs. Emma Ashton of Seward, was born at Milford June 7, 1920, and went with his parents to David City December 31, 1931. He graduated from the high school there in 1938, and while attending the state university was a member of the football team, and took part in the famous Rose Bowl game at Los Angeles, in 1940. After the game he went with the National Guards from Lincoln to Camp Robinson at Little Rock, Ark. After transferring to the Army Air Corps Burdette received his primary training at Sikeston, Mo., and his basic training at Randolph Field, Tex., completing his advanced training at the Ellington Field Advanced Flying School of the U.S. Army Air Corps near Houston, Tex, receiving his wings December 12, 1941. He was one of 49 cadets forming the first class graduated from that field since the first world war. He was assigned duty at Bridgeport, Conn., January 19, 1942, doing patrol duty daily, flying a P-40 type ship. Whenever President Roosevelt took up quarters at Hyde Park, Lieut.
